Thesis Abstract
Higher-Order Phase Modulation Formats for BB84 QKD Systems
In my thesis we extend the phase-coded implementation
of BB84 protocol from the present QPSK modulation format, to 8-PSK thereby
increasing the keyrate to 2 bits/qubit. The transmitter and receivers for
implementing 8-PSK BB84 QKD protocol is proposed that uses optical I/Q
modulators for phase modulation and homodyne detection for bit-decoding. The
security of the proposed scheme has been investigated and the worst case QBER
has been theoretically calculated to be 0.15625 when the eavesdropper uses the
Intercept-Resend attack strategy. This scheme has shown potential for
implementation of high key-rate QKD systems with acceptable QBER, when relevant
countermeasures are provided.
